Artist statement

To evoke the atmosphere, light, texture, movement and sounds from each environment that he discovers, the current practice by Jonathan Parnham initially involves painting on location. His en plein air works are often created in many capricious weather conditions whilst working amongst Icelandic waterfalls and glaciers, Wiltshire Downs or the Cornish coastline. Back in the studio, the experience of working outdoors provides rich stimulus for creating expressive, larger scale monotypes and paintings.

The ‘Sea Ice’ series of monotypes represent the artist’s observations involving the startling reality of Iceland’s rapidly retreating glaciers, in juxtaposition to their extreme beauty. Along the Wiltshire Downs, regular walks have also inspired searching monotypes which highlight the erosion of the ancient paths and terraced hills.

Literature provides a key influence within the artist’s imagery; the novels of George Mackay Brown, Robert Macfarlane and Magnús Sigurðsson are often notable references.

A collection of recent prints and paintings have been exhibited at the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives, Cornwall, and the Mount House Gallery, Marlborough, Wiltshire. Jonathan Parnham studied at the Royal College of Art; his work is held in private and public collections including Chippenham Museum. He has previously won international film awards for his short, fine art animated films.
